What Types of Ute Canopies Are There?

Do you use your ute for work? Would you like to equip your ute with a suitable canopy to enhance its utility? A ute canopy can help you make the most of the storage space on your ute's tray, while also protecting any cargo from theft as well as the elements. There are different types of canopies designed to meet the varying needs of users, and their work utes. If you are in the market for a ute canopy and would like to learn more about these useful accessories before making the best choice for your ute, you have come to the right place. Continue reading to learn more about the different types of ute canopies.

What Is A Ute Canopy?

In the simplest of terms, a ute canopy can be defined as an enclosure – made up of a roof, walls, windows and doors – designed to cover the tray of a small truck or ute. With it in place, you can create a secure and versatile storage space for your tools, equipment and camping gear, among others.

Types Of Ute Canopies

As mentioned above, there are different types of ute canopies out there, including:

Aluminium Canopies

Aluminium canopies are by far among the most commonly used ute canopies. This is mainly due to the fact that they come with a number of great benefits. For starters, they tend to be highly customisable. These canopies give users the freedom to install shelves on the tray. In some cases, the entire tray can even be removed and replaced with a fully customised aluminium-canopy-tray set-up. Considered to be great for work utes, aluminium canopies can be fitted with lockable doors on the sides and the rear. This boosts security while ensuring that everything on the tray is easily accessible at all times. It is also possible to find aluminium canopies with central locking and lighting as well as felt lining. However, while aluminium is a light material, these canopies can be significantly heavier than other available options such as fibreglass and canvas.

Fibreglass Canopies

Fibreglass canopies are by far the most popular type of canopies available today. One of the main selling points for these canopies is their lightweight nature. Fibreglass canopies can be easily installed on both flat and well trays. Fibreglass canopies are typically fitted with a rear door and lift-up or sliding windows on the sides. However, due to their weak structure, they cannot carry a lot of weight on top. If you intend to carry heavy loads on the roof rack, extra support is needed. Lastly, fibreglass canopies normally become brittle and fade with time.

Canvas Canopies

Considered to be a more flexible and cheaper alternative to the above options, canvas canopies are simply made up of a canvas cover held up by a supporting steel frame. To facilitate easy and convenient access at all times, these canopies are fitted with zips on the rear and the sides. While most of these canopies have canvas all around, some are fitted with an alloy hardtop. On the flip side, canvas canopies are known to be damaged easily and normally weather with time. Furthermore, these canopies do not provide the same level of security provided by the other two alternatives.
